My Book Goal for 2014

My book goal for reading books in 2014 was 144 books. Usually my goal is 100 books and I had been exceeding that for several years, so I thought I would make a goal that might be more accurate and more of a challenge for 2014.

I read 141 books and lots and lots of short stories that were necessary because they were embedded in several book series I wanted to read. As well there were a few books that were over 500 pages and one over 800. So I guess I have to accept that I didn’t meet the goal, but that is okay.

I tried to make sure that there were books and graphic novels for The Littles and the Teens to read. Time and energy is something that I don’t always have. The Teens had asked for several years to read graphic novels and since the libraries have lots and lots of them I kept saying and promising. I am proud to report that about six months ago I started checking graphic novels out of the library and they have been avidly reading.

I kept telling myself that I should be able to read 12 books each month and I was doing pretty great, until I hit October and was sick a lot, with ear and head pain that made reading something I really wasn’t able to get up much interest or tolerance for.

In December I debated whether or not I should devote enough time for reading so that I did accomplish my original goal. Instead I decided to enjoy the holiday month as much as possible and do a wide range of activities and reading, so that is what I did. Still I almost reached my original goal.

The Littles also read about 400 children’s books and the Teens read almost 100 graphic novel collections, which ranged from about 100 pages to over 400 pages. Our libraries have lots and lots of children’s picture books and graphic novels. So that is great.

My goal for 2015 is to read over 100 books and to make even more time in the coming year for reading for The Littles and the Teens.

Healing Quotes Teens 350

“Always go to bed with a good book. Or with someone who has just read one.”
~ Unknown

Healing Quotes Littles 338

“I woke up thinking a very pleasant thought. There is lots left in the world to read.”

~ Nicholson Baker, The Anthologist: A Novel

Healing Quotes Teens 349

“All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel…. Think about it. There’s escaping from the wolves, fighting the wolves, capturing the wolves, taming the wolves. Being thrown to the wolves, or throwing others to the wolves so the wolves will eat them instead of you. Running with the wolf pack. Turning into a wolf. Best of all, turning into the head wolf. No other decent stories exist.”
~ Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin

Healing Quotes Littles 337

“An hour spent reading is one stolen from paradise.”
~ Thomas Wharton

Healing Quotes Teens 348

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape?…If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”

~ J.R.R. Tolkien

“Reading is going toward something that is about to be, and no one yet knows what it will be.”
~ Italo Calvino, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler

Healing Quotes Teens 347

“Literature has been our salvation, literature has inspired and guided lovers, routed despair and can perhaps in this case save the world.”
~ John Cheever

“Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self.”
